Tafsir bil Ma’thur is also known as Tafsir bil Manqul because it involves explaining the Quran, the Hadith, or the sayings of the Companions, Successors, and their followers. Some scholars also include interpretations based on Israelite traditions (narratives from the People of the Book) under Tafsir bil Ma’thur because they are a form of transmitted knowledge.
